This intro to Christian Spiritual Writing workshop provides a fascinating overview of the history of writing as a spiritual practice across several Christian traditions, as well as guidance on how to develop a spiritual writing practice of your own. The workshop combines lecture, discussion, and a little bit of time to write. Participants leave with a new understanding of how writing can help them view spiritual writing as a discipline of their Christian faith. Spiritual Writing Guidance: Writing Transcendence

This workshop offers an exploration of the challenges of writing transcendenct experiences. It can be incredibly difficult for writers to express those moments of transcendence in their lives, in part because of the ways we are drawn to familiar words and phrases to describe intense spiritual and religious experiences. Let's explore why so many words and phrases become cliche, and how we can move beyond those overly familiar terms. This workshop includes some lecture, lots of conversation, and a brief period of writing time. The goal is to figure out how to write about those huge, transcendent life moments in a way that other readers understand why it was such a big deal.

Feminism & Princesses Workshop

I offer a 6-week class on Feminism & Princesses, but this one-time workshop covers the basics for small groups who can't commit to a multi-week class. In the class, we look at the good, the bad, the complicated, and the wonderful of the princess narratives we were raised with. The workshop is discussion-based and includes an overview of how feminists have interacted with princess narratives over time. This class is ideal for feminist groups and women's clubs. My teaching comes from an intersectional perspective, so we look at how different aspects of the characters' and viewers' identities play a role in feminist interpretation, including race, gender, orientation, disability status, neuro-divergence, body shape and size, economic status, and more.

Writing Deconstruction Narratives

Years ago, I offered a workshop at the Calvin Festival of Faith & Writing. We didn't have the language of "deconstruction" at the time, so it was called "Narratives of Leaving Fundamentalist Religious Communities." What a mouthful! In this workshop, we look at some of the most effective deconstruction memoirs and discuss what makes them successful. Our focus isn't on commercial success, but instead, we ask what makes them meaningful as works of literature. The bulk of this workshop operates as a facilitated discussion, with some time for brainstorming your own writing ideas. We explore this emerging genre and where our own stories might fit in. I am happy to teach this class to people who have deconstructed to atheism, agnosticism, another faith, or a more progressive form of Christianity, as well as groups representing multiple points of view.
